The Ministry of State for Development of Northern Kenya and other Arid Lands is seeking proposals for Pastoral and Agro-pastoral Livelihood Support Activities in ASAL areas with financial assistance from the Kenya Rural Development Programme.

Production of animal feeds and charcoal from prosopis

The aggressive colonisation of useful habitats such as pasture and farmlands by Prosopis juliflora has generated a lot of concern and debate.  However, a community in Garissa District is turning this tree, known for its negative impact on the livelihoods of people living in drylands and effect on animal health, into an income generating resource.

Institutional Building

DMI has facilitated the preparation of all draft legal documents for establishing the structure of the fund and operation manuals indicating criteria and procedures for disbursement, accounting, procurement, and auditing.

Establishment of Community Structures

DMI promotes the creation of community-level disaster management committees. This is considered paramount to enhance the role of communities in drought management, with a number of expected benefits in the overall performance of the drought management system.
