Training of District Steering Groups

DMI has continued supporting the Arid lands Resource Management Project (ALRMP) in efforts to strengthen the role and capacity of the District Steering Groups (DSGs).

Participants follow proceedings during a training for Laikipia District Steering Group.

This has been mainly through the organisation of specific training courses aimed at transferring skills in the area of coordination for drought management and food security. This activity is especially relevant for the new DSGs (in the recently established districts), in that it creates a forum to discuss responsibilities and mandates of the DSG members and related operational modalities and standards.

Capacity building of the drought management structure at the district level includes support to the District Drought Management Units (DDMUs).

Early warning radio broadcasts

The project also supported the use of radio broadcasting in Kilifi district to disseminate information on drought management and early warning status. This pilot initiative is intended to increase awareness on drought management related services among rural communities, inform on drought situation and possible responses during crises.
