Integrated use of water

As part of the Community Managed Disaster Risk Reduction (CMDRR) process, DMI finances some of the more relevant DRR projects identified by the communities through the Participatory Disaster Risk Assessment (PDRA).
Ndigiria water pan in Kilifi District demonstrates how integrated use of water can enhance resilience to drought, boost food security and diversify livelihoods.
The pan was excavated in Ndigiria location in 2008 using the European Commission Drought Contingency Funds following a request by the Bamba Disaster Risk Reduction committee promoted under DMI.
The pan impounded a consistent amount of water during the next rains, which the community now relies on for domestic and livestock use and small-scale irrigation.
The community later asked for facilitation to acquire greenhouses and start fish farming using water from the pan. DMI has procured four irrigation kits comprising greenhouses and agricultural inputs, which have greatly improved the community’s horticultural production.
The community has established four fish ponds around the water pan to diversify their livelihood and sources of income. DMI has funded excavation of the fish ponds, capacity building, purchase of initial stock of fish fingerlings, fish feeds, harvesting gear and storage accessories.
The water pan has boosted food security in an area where residents walked for up to 10kms in search of water and it also serves residents of neighbouring divisions.
