The drought management structure at the national level includes the Kenya Food Security Meeting (KFSM), which is an advisory group on all issues pertaining to drought and food security.

The Kenya Food Security Steering Group (KFSSG), a KFSM sub-committee, acts as a technical advisory body. District Steering Groups (DSGs) are key components of drought coordination and early warning at the district level.

DSGs make decisions on all drought management issues in the district. These include determining drought warning stages, designing and implementing contingency response plans, monitoring and evaluating drought-related activities and coordination of emergency interventions.

The DSG is a sub-committee of the District Development Committee (DDC) and is chaired by the District Commissioner (DC). DMI aims to support drought management structures in Kenya, with particular emphasis on capacity building of DSGs.
